The Shark Vacuum is one of the best vacuum cleaners in the market. It is cheap and uses some of the best suction technology in the industry.
But what do you do when the suction power begins to weaken? Should you repair the machine, or even replace it?
No. All you need to do is clean the equipment, and you’re good to go.
How do you know that your vacuum needs cleaning?

1. Cleaning the Rotating Brush
The best place to start when cleaning a Shark Vacuum is the rotating brush. Strands of hair, string, and fabric, may end up wound around the brush. The heap of material can end up clogging the machine. The result is loss of suction, an awful smell, and most probably, a weird sound.
The first thing you need to do is to unplug the Shark from the outlet. Lay it on the floor so that you can see the rotating brush. Use a pair of scissors to remove any hair or string from the rotating brush. It is a good idea to place a paper beneath the machine. This will help prevented additional cleanups.
2. Cleaning the canister
It is important to keep the canister clean at all times. The suction power of a Shark Navigator or Rotator is incredible. The product is able to collect significant amounts of hair, dirt, food, and dust. Even though the canister may be a good size, it is bound to fill up quickly as a result.
Hence, you should empty this canister regularly. Ignoring to empty the canister often will mean a full canister. The product will thus not be able to collect any more dirt. This is because there is no more space in its dirt canister.
A good rule of thumb is to empty the canister every time you notice it is half-full. Gently tap the canister against the side of the trash bin. This will ensure that the big dust and dirt particles fall into the bin. After emptying the canister, you can wipe the inside to remove any remaining small particles of dust and dirt. You can achieve this by simply using a damp cloth to wipe it down.
However, that may not be enough to keep the vacuum running smoothly. You should wash the canister at least once a month. Place the canister in a bowl of warm water, and proceed to wash it with soap. You can use a soft brush to reach all the nooks of the canister. Once the canister is clean, place it outdoors and let it dry. You can assemble it back into a Shark Navigator once it has dried.
3. Cleaning the Plastic Filters
The Shark vacuum usually has foam and felt filters in its system. Some models have one or two filters, while others have three. The filters are usually made of foam rubber or felt. If this system is blocked, then your vacuum is bound to lose essential suction power. A blocked filter system could also contribute to the machine leaving dirt behind.
To clean the filter system, you will need to remove the dirt canister first and place it aside. Then, remove each filter carefully, taking note of their order. This will help you return them in the correct order. If you place the filters in an incorrect order, the vacuum may be unable to work. Place the foam filters in a bowl of warm soapy water. Wash them thoroughly and then rinse.
Place the filters outside so that they can dry faster. Another option is to place them on top of a running dryer. This will make the water evaporate quicker. It is important to let them dry completely. Otherwise, you may end up with a vacuum full of mold and mildew. This is the last thing you want in your cleaning equipment.
When the filters are thoroughly dry, you can go ahead and place them back in the vacuum along with the canister.
4. Cleaning the HEPA filters
The HEPA filters are also a part of the filter system. They need thorough and regular cleaning as well. Majority of Sharks come with a pair of HEPA filters. You can alternate between the two sets to minimize wear and tear. In addition, alternation helps you keep the filters clean without having to stop vacuuming.
You can find the HEPA filters beneath the dirt canister. Remove them carefully and set them aside. Wash each filter thoroughly until they’re clean using some warm soapy water. You can use a non-abrasive detergent to make the water soapy. You can also use regular dishwashing soap.
Squeeze all the water from the filters, and then place them in an appropriate place to dry. It takes much longer for the HEPA filters to dry compared to the plastic filters. You should wait for them to completely dry before placing them back in the Shark.
Alternatively, you can use the other set of filters. This will allow you to use the vacuum sooner than you expected.
Please note that you will eventually need to replace the filters in the filter system. Ensure that the replacement filters you buy are fit for your vacuum. In addition, it is probably best to buy the replacements ahead of time as a precautionary measure.
