We compared our choices based on rather or not they were low cost and if they wireless connected to Androids and iPhones. Our comparison table looked at their dimensions and weight, which was important for determining how portable they were. It looked at the type of battery it used and the average battery life. This helped to determine convenience and how often it would need to be recharged before dying. It also looked at whether it came with a warranty that protected against product defects in materials and workmanship. This can help you save money in the long run.
Why isn’t the JBL Xtreme on My List?
I’ve received a few questions as to why the JBL Xtreme is not on my list. To answer your concerns, let me first talk about the JBL Xtreme for a moment. To be honest, it’s a great portable Bluetooth speaker. Its bass is incredible and it supports up to 15 hours of sound. It can also connect up to 3 different wireless connections at once. That said, here are the 2 reasons why I decided to leave out the JBL Xtreme.
It’s too expensive
I know that this is not much of an argument considering that we added the Bose SoundLink III. However, we were willing to add only 1 expensive alternative and the Bose was cheaper and simply more impressive. The JBL Xtreme cost almost $250 which was simply way too much money to be considered for our list.
Bad History with JBL
This may be more of a personal reason but it accounts for something. JBL’s customer service could really be improved. Out of respect for the great products, we added the JBL Flip and Charge to our list. But we had to cut it off at 2.
1. Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 Phantom Wireless Mobile Bluetooth (Best Speaker for Outdoors)
The Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 wireless Bluetooth speakers start off our list. Featuring a full 360-degree design, you can capture every note from any angle. With a wireless range of up to 100 feet, it’s the perfect option for any outdoor setting. It also comes with an IPX7 waterproof casing that provides protection for up to 30 minutes at depths of up to 1 meter. With a Siri + Google Now voice integration software, this high-quality speaker responds to voice commands.
The Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 features a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. While the battery lifespan may vary based on product and age, the average starting time is 15 hours. Via the Ultimate Ears app, you’re able to connect with more than 150 speakers at one time. This provides the ultimate sound for any indoor or outdoor location. The over-the-air speaker updates keep the Ultimate Ears Boom 2 up to date and ready for action. Meanwhile, its shockproof casing prevents minor scratches and malfunctions, guaranteeing that this speaker will last years.
Most negative reviews about the Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 tended to revolve around the battery’s short lifespan. While the battery starts off at an average of 15 hours, it quickly fades to roughly 3 to 4 hours.
This may vary based on the location and conditions of the area. Nevertheless, this seems like a major product defect that needs to be looked into.
The Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 comes with a few extra accessories. These include a camera mount and a detachable D-ring. At 1.2 pounds, it features a lightweight design for easy portability and movement. It’s available in a number of different shades, such as white, black, red, green, blue, etc. While it doesn’t come with a product warranty, some 3rd party vendor websites may offer some sort of protection plan. It always helps to look into that.
2. Ultimate Ears BOOM I Wireless Bluetooth Speaker (Ultimate BOOM Alternative)
Next up on our list is the Ultimate Ears BOOM I, the predecessor of the BOOM 2. We were honestly so impressed by the BOOM series that we decided to add the BOOM I as a slightly cheaper option. Like the BOOM 2, this wireless Bluetooth speaker features a rechargeable lithium-ion battery with a lifespan of 15 hours. It has a 360 speaker design for bold, surround-sound volume from all angles. With a water-resistant coating, it can easily handle a light rain or a few drops of water.
Unlike its successor, the Ultimate Ears BOOM I features a life-resistant plasma coating. This protects against stains and minor scratches. It also offers a Live Wirelessly feature for switching songs, taking phone calls, and updating your speakers from up to 50 feet away. Through the UE BOOM app, you can connect to different UE BOOM speakers at once. This allows for a broader range of sound, as well as, a more convenient speaker.
Unfortunately, the Ultimate Ears BOOM I has the same problem as the BOOM 2. The battery tends to give out pretty quickly. Unlike the BOOM 2, which fades to 3 to 4 hours, the BOOM I may require a brand new battery within the first year.
Again, it really does depend on the location, conditions, and how long you keep it on the charger when not in use.
With a 3.5 charging time, the Ultimate Ears BOOM 2 is very easy to handle. Although it doesn’t come with a warranty, you can purchase a protection plan via a 3rd party website. Overall, this product it’s a great speaker for any home or indoor location. Slightly cheaper than the BOOM 2, it offers many similar features as its replacement. If you were impressed by the BOOM 2, I highly recommend that you check out the Ultimate Ears BOOM I.
3. Cambridge SoundWorksOontZ Angle 3 (Best Bluetooth Speaker for the Money)
If you’re looking for a cheap, affordable Bluetooth speaker that features high-quality sound, then look no further. The Cambridge SoundWorksOontZ Angle 3 is, by far, the cheapest on our list. However, it features a bold, rich sound for up to 30 hours of usage. With anIPX5 waterproof casing, it easily resists both a sprinkle and a downpour. While it can’t be completely submerged in water, it can take some dust and sand without shutting down.
The Cambridge SoundWorksOontZ Angle 3 connects in a matter of seconds. Guaranteed to fill up a room, its dual 1.7” precision drivers provide ample amount of sound wherever you go. As a Bluetooth wireless speaker, it can connect to a wide range of products. These include tablets, MACs, iPod, iPads, iPhones, any smartphone, TVs, and computers. It can also connect with non-Bluetooth devices via its 3.5mm audio cable. What’s even better is that it comes with a built-in microphone for hands-free phone calls via Smartphone.
The downside to the Cambridge SoundWorksOontZ Angle 3 is that it struggles to keep a connection. You may not want to use this Bluetooth speaker outdoors. You can try to use it in the car but no promises.
Unfortunately, there’s no exact range for how far the speaker’s Bluetooth wireless can reach. You may need to play around with it to get an idea.
The Cambridge SoundWorksOontZ Angle 3 is a compact Bluetooth speaker with a highly impressive sound and battery life. Small, yet durable, it’s a product that can last for years. It also comes in 3 different sizes: 3, 3 Plus, and 3XL. If you’re looking for a slightly bigger version with just as much power than I’d recommend the 3XL at 11.5 inches.
4. Bose SoundLink (Best Mini Bluetooth Speaker II )
Not surprisingly, we have a Bose product on our list. First up, is the Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II. Built with a lithium-ion battery, it’s guaranteed a battery life of up to 10 hours. With an ultra-compact, yet stylish design, it can be taken and used anywhere. Despite its lightweight design, it’s a pretty powerful speaker with an even more impressive casing. Durable and capable of withstanding a few hits, or falls, it’s a high-quality item that doesn’t require much maintenance.

It offers a full, room encasing volume for whatever the scenario. It’s an extremely easy to handle the product. You can easily navigate its controls via the multifunction button located on its top.
The Bose SoundLink Mini speaker’s major flaw maybe it’s price. That and that it doesn’t pair with stereos. Unfortunately, this handy mini Bluetooth speaker is one of the most expensive products that are featured on our list. While it is a very impressive speaker, it might not be in the price range for quite a few of our readers. However, due to its amazing design, it should definitely be considered an option.
The Bose SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II comes with a few extra accessories. These include a charging cradle, a wall charger, and an extra cable. The JBL Flip 3 Bluetooth Speaker features a 3000mAH rechargeable lithium-ion battery and a 10-hour battery life. With a highly durable, splash-proof casing, it can easily handle light rain and sprinkles. However, it will malfunction if fully submerged in water. Its dual external passive radiators grant a room-filling sound that you can appreciate quite a distance away. It also features a built-in echo and noise canceling speakerphone. This is perfect for answering phone calls via its iPhone and Smartphone connection.
The JBL Flip 3 comes with a handy JBL Connect app that provides the ability to connect multiple JBL speakers at once. It’s also capable of wirelessly streaming up to 3 different Bluetooth capable tablets, iPhones, and Smartphones at the same time. Available in 8 different colors, this portable Bluetooth speaker is not only convenient but also stylish. Each JBL Flip 3 features its own sleek, durable design for long lasting use and low maintenance. This Bluetooth speaker makes the perfect gift for any loved one or friend.
According to few customer reviews, the JBL Flip 3 Bluetooth Speaker’s battery tends to malfunction after 3 months of use. The battery might stop taking a charge or it may suddenly overheat and shut down.
It’s important to note that this doesn’t always happen to every JBL Flip 3. However, it’s still something you should look out for when purchasing this portable speaker.
The JBL Flip 3 Bluetooth Speaker is not only durable but also extremely affordable. At 1.5 pounds, it’s lightweight and very portable. If you’re looking for a great speaker for your dorm or apartment, this might be the best option for you. Don’t limit yourself to a cheaper, less practical Bluetooth speaker when you can easily go for one of the best on the market.

Along with the Amazon Tap, this product comes with a charging cradle, a microUSB cable and adapter, and an instruction manual. Overall, it’s a great product for any location and any situation.
There are 2 common complaints about the Amazon Tap Bluetooth Speaker. Both of which, I can completely agree with. The first is Alexa. Because of the hands-free system, learning how to navigate the system can be a bit frustrating.
Alexa definitely doesn’t help the situation. The next is lack of sound. Despite its Dolby dual stereo speakers, the speaker could play at least a bit louder. However, this may a relative complaint based on the person or situation.
The Amazon Tap Alexa Bluetooth Speaker is a great portable speaker for parties and get togethers. Although it is, admittedly, a bit pricey, it’s still one of the more affordable products on our list. If you’re still unsure, it helps to know that this portable speaker comes with a 1-year warranty. This warranty protects against product defects in materials and workmanship. You can also purchase an extended 2 or 3-year warranty with the purchase of this Bluetooth speaker. Make sure that you contact the manufacturer for more details, beforehand.
Best Bose Portable Speaker
It should come as no surprise that another Bose Bluetooth Speaker is on our list. This time we’ll be reviewing the Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth Speaker II. At 1.2 pounds, it’s honestly surprising how much sound this little guy provides. Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, it’ capable of providing up to 8 hours of sound, easily. Its soft silicone exterior is both durable and waterproof. As a water-resistant speaker, it can handle a light shower and heavy drench. However, you might want to avoid fully submerging the speaker in water.

It also comes with a built-in microphone app which is perfect for taking phone calls via your iPhone or Smartphone. Out of all the Bose products on our list, it’s possibly the most impressive one in terms of durability and longevity. If you’re looking for a great Bose-manufactured portable Bluetooth speaker, then this might be your best option.
I do have to warn you that the Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth Speaker II has the tendency to drop signals. It might take a little bit of time to fine Bluetooth wireless connections before connecting them. This speaker works better in smaller locations.
The Bose SoundLink Color Bluetooth Speaker II is available in a variety of colors, including red, white, black, blue, etc. The complementary Bose Connect App is really what makes this product, and all Bose products, shine. Its app provides the ability to easily drag and drop Bluetooth connections on your iPhone or tablet. This allows you to quickly and simply control who has wireless access to your speakers.
8. JBL Charge 3 - Best Battery Life
Due to its 22.2Wh lithium-ion battery, the JBL Charge 3 features an impressive battery life of 20 hours. With an IPX7 waterproof casing, this portable Bluetooth speaker is capable of withstanding light rain and sprinkles. Its built-in echo and noise canceling stereos make it a great option for taking phone calls via an iPhone or Smartphone. The manufacturer claims that the JBL Charge 3 can handle up to 3 Bluetooth wireless devices at once. However, we’ve noticed that if you try to connect more than 2 devices, JBL or not, it tends to drop signal or not recognize signals. That’s why you should probably only consider this speaker if you need to use 2 or less.
Outside, the JBL Charge 3 blares a surprisingly crisp sound for roughly 20 feet. It can be fully submerged in water for up to 30 minutes and still work like new. You can even prop this portable Bluetooth speaker up horizontally or vertically. I think that it’s safe to say that the JBL Charge 3 is an incredibly impressive product. Not only durable but versatile and perfect for any situation.

11. ION Audio Tailgater (iPA77) - Editor's Choice
The ION Audio Tailgater (iPA77) is next on our list with an impressive battery life of 50 hours. That’s 50 hours of continuous, full and rich sound. Along with a Bluetooth wireless connection, this speaker also features an AM/FM radio. The radio also comes with 6 pre-set buttons for storing 6 FM stations and 6 AM stations of your choice. Its range reaches an incredible 100 feet making it the perfect option for a block party. The 1.8” auxiliary input allows you to connect CD and tape players for a more versatile use.
What’s most impressive about the ION Audio Tailgater (iPA77) is its incredibly durable design. Built like a professional speaker, it utilizes reinforced corners to tackle in rough bumps or falls. Finally, it features a USB power-bank for conveniently charging tablets, iPads, iPhones, Smartphones, and more. The ION Audio Tailgater (iPA77) is the best option for any wild or crazy party or function.
The downside to the ION Audio Tailgater (iPA77) is its size. While it’s an extremely durable product, it’s also extremely heavy. At 17 pounds, it’s most likely the least portable Bluetooth speaker on our list.
What makes it so much worse is the fact that it doesn’t come with wheels. So, if size isn’t a problem, then I’d definitely recommend this product.
The ION Audio Tailgater (iPA77) is definitely a favorite on this list. It’s the Bluetooth speaker that’s guaranteed to provide the most fun. Not only that, but ION manufactures other Bluetooth speakers that look even cooler than the Tailgater. Such as the Block Party which is much more expensive but comes with fun LED lights on its base. 12. Harman Kardon Onyx Studio III (Best for Home Use)
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio Bluetooth Speaker was originally developed from a partnership between H/K and Sprint 2014. Via its built-in microphone, you can easily accept hands-free phone calls with your iPhone or Smartphone. This product’s perfect for pairing with tablets, iPads, laptops, and any Bluetooth-enabled device.
The downside to the Black & Decker BDH200PL is that the pivotal joint is completely defenseless against sand or dirt. Sometimes debris may slip into the joint that allows the handheld vacuum to bend. This jams up the car vacuum and gets it stuck in one position. You may need to rinse the debris out or use a crevice tool to unstick it. Otherwise, this seems to be a major design flaw.
While the Onyx Studio Bluetooth Speaker may not be our favorite, it’s one that we recognize as a potential best-seller. It also comes with a 1-year warranty against product defects in materials and workmanship. Overall, it’s an extremely durable and powerful product that won’t disappoint.

Portable Bluetooth Speaker – Buyer’s Guide
In this next section, we’ll be reviewing some common terms and features you may want to consider when purchasing a portable Bluetooth speaker. Knowing this can be extremely helpful by saving you money and time in the future. So, why don’t you take a quick look at our buyer’s guide?
AptX:This is supported by many devices except for most iPhones. It’s a wireless codec that provides exceptional wireless audio.
NFC:Near Field Communication “NFC” is the technology that allows you to wirelessly establish a link between your Bluetooth speaker and your device.
Stereo pairing:This means to pair your speakers together for a fuller sound. Some Bluetooth speakers only support 2 pairing at once, while others may support 3 or more.
Portable power bank:USB power banks allow you to charge your devices via your Bluetooth speaker. These include tablets, laptops, mp3s, and iPhones. However, this drains your speaker’s power at the same time.
Water resistant:It’s becoming increasingly popular for Bluetooth speakers to be built with a water resistant casing. This means that they can handle rain and sea or pool side entertainment without worry of malfunction. Some systems can be fully submerged for up to 30 minutes and still work like new.
However, it’s important to notice the difference between “water resistant” and “waterproof.” Water resistant typically means that it can be fully submerged while waterproof is often used for light rain or sprinkles. It’s important that you read the instruction manual to clarify which term is being applied. You can tell how resistant it is based on its IP code.
IP codes are used to define how resistant the product is to sand, dirt, dust, and water. A 2 digit number will be applied with the IP to show how resistant it is, such as “IP64”. The higher the number, the more resistant it is.
Stereo vs. Mono
These are determined based on the number of channels used. Mono means 1 channel is being used. Stereo means more than 1 channel is being used. When you listen to something using mono, then the same channel is being sent to each speaker or head phone. However, when listening to something in stereo that means that different channels are being sent. This provides a fuller sound and you can even control how much sound is coming from each speaker.
What is Bluetooth?
In short, Bluetooth means short-range wireless technology. You can use it to connect different devices wirelessly.
So, now that you know about the top 12 Bluetooth speakers of 2017, do you know which one you’ll buy? Of course, when choosing the best product for yourself, you have to consider when, where, and how you’ll use it.
Do you plan on throwing a party? Or perhaps just use it for conference calls? If you need it for sea side entertainment, you might want to get a waterproof system. It’s important to know that there are dozens of different options out there. Don’t limit yourself to playing music when you can be DJ-ing or singing karaoke.
Overall, I hope this article helped you find the perfect speakers for you and your friends. If you enjoyed this article, I encourage you to write a review.
